Corona Standalone is intended mainly for use by powerusers and 3rd party plugin developers with special exporters. It does not come in a "studio" version with graphic interface. All Corona Renderer properties from the host application can be exported into it, and developers of exporters have access to all features.
If you want to create a scene in some 3D application which does not have a Corona Renderer plugin yet, and you want to render that scene using Corona Standalone, then the only option available for now is to import the model to other supported application (3ds Max, Cinema 4D,...), or to create an exporter script that saves the model, lights and materials as an OBJ file.
Currently, the advantages of using Corona Standalone include:
- Possibility to render 3D scenes without other 3D software (e.g. on a computer without 3ds Max installed)
- Lower RAM usage - Corona Standalone will use less RAM than 3ds Max

Simple Guide
Note: this example requires 3ds Max installed!
-
By default, Corona Standalone will be installed into:
-Corona Renderer 2 or older: C:\Program Files\Corona\ and the executable name is Corona.exe
-Corona Renderer 3 or newer: C:\Program Files\Corona\Standalone\ and the executable name is Corona.exe -
Start 3ds Max and prepare your scene for rendering
-
Render your scene:
-
In 3ds Max, go to Render Setup > Performance > Development / Experimental Stuff and press Export+Render
This will immediately export the current scene into .scn format and start rendering it with Corona Standalone
or -
Go to Render Setup > System and press Export scene..., then select the location where the scene should be exported
-
Launch the Corona Standalone application
-
When launched, the application will show a dialog asking for the scene to be rendered - select your .scn file, and it will start rendering
