What to do if you get errors during a Chaos product installation

This article explains how to fully remove and re-install:

  • The affected Chaos product
  • Chaos License Server
  • Chaos Unified Login app (ULA)

1. Uninstall the Chaos product

First remove the product that failed to install (V-Ray, Enscape, Corona, Vantage, etc.).

Windows

  1. Open Control Panel → Programs and Features
or Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find your Chaos product (for example “V-Ray for 3ds Max”, “Enscape”, “Corona for Cinema 4D”, etc.).
  3. Click Uninstall and follow the wizard.

macOS

  1. Quit your host application (3ds Max, SketchUp, Rhino, etc.)
  2. Remove the Chaos product using the Uninstall shortcut for that product.

Note: Many product uninstallers only remove the plugin itself. They usually do not uninstall the Chaos License Server, Chaos Cloud Client, Chaos Cosmos or Chaos Unified Login, which is why we handle those separately.

Once the product is removed, continue with the licensing components.

2. Uninstall the Chaos License Server

Windows

Follow these steps to uninstall the License Server:

  1. Open the Start menu and start typing Uninstall Chaos License Server, then click the shortcut.
  2. Run the uninstaller and complete the process.

macOS

  1. Open Finder and locate Chaos License Server in Applications → Chaos → VRLService
  2. Use the supplied uninstall script.

3. Uninstall the Chaos Unified Login app (ULA)

The Unified Login Application is a separate component used for single sign-on. It must be removed cleanly, especially when fixing installation or sign-in issues.

Windows

Chaos Unified Login can be removed by:

  • Open Start menu → start typing Uninstall Chaos Unified Login, then click the shortcut
  • Running the uninstaller from:
    C:\Program Files\Chaos\UnifiedLogin\uninstall

macOS

For current builds, ULA is installed in the user’s home folder.

  1. Quit all Chaos products.
  1. Open Finder and go to the Unified Login folder (default path):
    Applications → Chaos → UnifiedLogin → uninstall
  2. Run the uninstaller.

4. Extra cleanup for earlier versions

For older License Server / ULA versions, some data may be left behind after uninstalling. Removing it can help installation succeed.

4.1 License Server leftovers (older versions)

Windows

Only do this after you have uninstalled the License Server from Programs and Features.

  1. Stop the License Server service (if present):
    • Open Services (press Win + R, type services.msc).
    • Look for Chaos License Server, VRLService, or similar.
    • Right-click → Stop.

  2. Delete the program and shared files:
    • C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\VRLService
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\ChaosGroup\ssl

  3. Delete per-user SSL data (do this for each affected Windows user account, if applicable):
    • %APPDATA%\Chaos\VRLService\ssl

macOS

  1. Ensure the License Server is not running.
  2. Delete per-user SSL data:
    • Use Finder → Go → Go to Folder… → ~/.ChaosGroup/ssl and delete it

4.2 Unified Login leftovers (older versions & deep cleanup)

These steps are useful when you have persisting sign-in / installation problems and need a fully clean ULA environment.

Windows

  1. Remove Windows Credential Manager entries:

    1. Open Control Panel → Credential Manager.

    2. Under Windows Credentials, remove entries named:

      • ChaosULA

      • ChaosUnifiedLogin

  2. Delete the UnifiedLogin folder (per user):

    • %LOCALAPPDATA%\Chaos\UnifiedLogin\

macOS

  1. Remove Keychain entries:

    1. Open Keychain Access.

    2. Search for these items and delete them:

      • ChaosULA

      • ChaosUnifiedLogin

  2. Delete the UnifiedLogin folder (per user):

    • Use Finder → Go → Go to Folder… → ~/.Chaos/UnifiedLogin and delete this folder

On some systems only one of these locations will exist – remove whatever is present.

5. Reinstall the product

Once everything is cleaned up:

  1. Install your Chaos product again.
  2. Try to use your product and sign in when prompted

If, after the clean uninstall and reinstall, you still hit errors:

  1. Re-run the installer until the error appears.
  2. On the error screen, use the “Show log” / “View log” option and save the log file.
  3. Go to the Chaos Help Center and choose Submit a request. Attach:
  • The installer log file(s)
  • A description of:
    • The product and version (e.g. V-Ray 7 for 3ds Max 2025, Enscape 4.14)
    • Your OS version (Windows build / macOS version)
    • Whether this is a fresh install or an upgrade

The Chaos Support team will then be able to review your logs and environment and suggest a specific fix.
