Basic Information on Corona and the Chaos License Server

Understanding the Chaos License Server Requirement for Corona

Changes in licensing from Corona 7 to Corona 8

In versions up to and including Corona 7, the Corona Licensing Server application was an optional component. Users had the discretion to install it based on their specific needs, such as for render farms.

Chaos License Server: A mandatory component in Corona 8+

With the release of Corona 8 and subsequent versions, the licensing system has been unified with that of V-Ray and other Chaos products. As a result, the Chaos License Server has become a necessary component for activating Corona. Without it, activation is not possible.

Upgrading to Corona 8 or newer

If you're transitioning from Corona 7 or an earlier version to Corona 8 or a newer release, you will encounter a notification during the installation process. This alert will inform you that the Chaos License Server is now essential and will guide you through the items you need to install.

Standard installation and activation process

If you're setting up Corona on a single computer or multiple computers without needing advanced activation methods, follow the standard installation process:

  1. Proceed with the installation process as prompted.
  2. When you reach the screen to select installation components, ensure the License Server option is checked (it is selected by default).
  3. Complete the installation. The License Server will be installed on your computer, allowing you to activate Corona and other Chaos products.

Setting up a central License Server for advanced installation and activation

If you're setting up a large render farm or need to manage multiple computers, using one central License Server is an efficient solution. This allows you to activate licenses from a single networked computer rather than individually on each machine.

How to install the central License Server

  1. Install the License Server on one computer. This can be done automatically with the Typical installation option or manually enabled during a Custom installation.
  2. Ensure that the License Server is not installed on any other computers.
  3. Verify that all computers needing a license can connect to the one running the License Server.
  4. On each computer requiring a license, configure the license settings to point to the central License Server.
