Activating Corona 8 or newer on farms and computers without host software GUI

Note: This guide is for activating Corona 8 or newer on render farms and computers without a host software GUI. It's typically used for activating Corona on multiple computers, such as one workstation and 10 or more render nodes over LAN.

Automating Corona activation

For Windows users

  1. On your Master PC, navigate to the folder path:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\ChaosGroup\
  2. Copy the vrlclient.xml file and paste it into a network folder accessible from any computer on your network.
  3. If the vrlclient.xml file is not present:
    • For 3ds Max users: Go to
      C:\Program Files\Chaos\Corona\tools
      for your version of 3ds Max and run setvrlservice.exe to create the file.
    • For Cinema 4D users: Go to
      C:\Program Files\Maxon Cinema 4D RXX\plugins\corona\utils
      for your version of Cinema 4D and run setvrlservice.exe.
  4. Edit the copied vrlclient.xml file with a plain text editor to include the IP address of your PC running the Chaos License Server. Editing the vrlclient.xml file on Windows
  5. Save the changes.
  6. On the computers where you wish to activate Corona, stop the Chaos License Server service using the Windows Start menu -> Chaos -> Stop Chaos License Server tool.
  7. Copy the edited vrlclient.xml file to:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\ChaosGroup\
    Replace the file if it already exists.
  8. Restart the Chaos License Server using the Windows Start menu -> Chaos -> Start Chaos License Server tool.

For macOS users

  1. On your Master computer, open a Finder window, select "Go" then "Go to Folder..." and enter:
    /Users/<USER_NAME>/.ChaosGroup/
    Replace <USER_NAME> with your Mac's username.
  2. Copy the vrlclient.xml file and paste it into a network folder accessible from any computer on your network.
  3. Edit the copied file with a plain text editor like TextEdit to include the IP address of your computer running the Chaos License Server. Editing the vrlclient.xml file on macOS
  4. Save the changes.
  5. On the computers where you wish to activate Corona, copy the edited vrlclient.xml file to the same location, replacing it if necessary.
  6. Restart the Chaos License Server by stopping the "vrol.bin" process in the "Activity Monitor" app. The process will reopen automatically.

Troubleshooting

  • If the vrlclient.xml file is missing, reinstall the Chaos License Server as outlined in the Corona and Chaos License Server Basic Troubleshooting Steps.
  • You can add your credentials to the vrlclient.xml file, but be aware that this exposes your registered email address and password. Adding credentials to the vrlclient.xml file
