How to fix “Chaos Unified Login is running under a different user”

When this message appears, it means Chaos Unified Login is already running on the same machine, but under a different user account. The error will show you which account that is, for example: “Chaos Unified Login is currently running under a different Windows user:  john.doe.”.

Because each machine can run only one copy of Chaos Unified Login at a time, your products cannot use it from your own account while it is active under someone else’s.

What you can do

1. Ask the other user to log out or quit ULA

Ask your colleague to log into their account on this machine and save their work, then log out of their account.

Then you can login to your account. Open Chaos Unified Login in your account and try again:

  • On Windows, click the Start button, type Start Chaos Unified Login and click to start the app.
  • On Mac, оpen Finder and go to the Unified Login folder: Applications → Chaos → Unified Login, then start the ula app.

2. Restart the machine (if allowed)

If the other user is not available and your local policy allows it:

  1. Save your work and restart the computer.
  2. Log in with your account, then try again to use your Chaos product.

Note: Restarting will close all sessions and may cause the other user to lose unsaved work.

If you’re not allowed to restart, or don’t know who the other user is:

  • Contact your IT / system administrator and ask them to log out that user or stop Chaos Unified Login so you can run it under yours.

To avoid this in the future

On shared machines, users should log out when finished instead of using Switch User / fast user switching.
