How to fix “Chaos Unified Login is not running”

This message means the Chaos Unified Login app cannot be accessed by your product. Most often this happens because:

  • The Unified Login app is not started
  • It’s disabled from starting with your system
  • It’s blocked by a firewall or security tool
  • It’s not installed correctly

Follow the steps for your operating system below.

Windows

1 Start Chaos Unified Login manually

  1. Click the Start button and start typing: Start Chaos Unified Login.
  2. Click the Start Chaos Unified Login shortcut.
  3. Start your Chaos product and try logging in again from the product.

If this fixes the issue but it comes back after a restart, continue with the next steps.

2 Make sure Chaos Unified Login starts with Windows

  1. Open the Windows Task Manager (you can use the Ctrl+Shift+Esc hotkey combination)
  2. Go to the Startup apps tab (this may be called Startup on older Windows versions)
  3. In the list, look for ulasupervisor.exe
  4. Make sure its Status is set to Enabled:
    • If it says Disabled, right-click it and choose Enable.
  5. Restart your computer and check if the error is gone.

Some “PC optimizer”, “game booster”, or “startup manager” tools may silently disable Chaos Unified Login.

  1. Open any such tool you use and check its list of startup or background apps.
  2. Make sure Chaos Unified Login (ula.exe), Chaos Unified Supervisor (ulasupervisor.exe) are not blocked or disabled.
  3. Restart your computer and try using your Chaos product again.

3 Check your firewall / security software

If Chaos Unified Login appears to be running but you still see the error, a firewall or security suite may be blocking access to it. If you’re on a company network, ask your IT administrator to confirm that the app (ula.exe) and the required address/port for Chaos Unified Login are not blocked: http://localhost:30301/

4 Reinstall Chaos Unified Login

If you don’t see the Start Chaos Unified Login shortcut, the app may not be installed correctly.

  1. Download the latest Chaos Unified Login installer from:
    https://my.chaos.com/download/build?product=Unified+Login
  2. Run the installer and complete the setup.
  3. Restart your computer (recommended).
  4. Start your Chaos product and try logging in again from the product.

If the Chaos Unified Login app is installed, but has issues, you can try to re-install it by following the steps in this article.

macOS

1 Start Chaos Unified Login manually

  1. Open Finder and go to the Unified Login folder (default path):
Applications → Chaos → Unified Login
  2. Start the ula app.
  3. Start your Chaos product and try logging in again from the product.

If this fixes the issue but it comes back after a restart, continue with the next steps.

2 Make sure it starts at login

Chaos Unified Login installs a helper script that registers its background supervisor as a service and makes sure it always starts:

  1. Open Finder and go to the installation folder (default path):
Applications → Chaos → Unified Login
  2. Locate the script named registerService and double-click to run it.

After running registerService, restart your Mac and try to use your Chaos product again.

3 Check your firewall / security software

If Unified Login appears to be running but you still see the error, a firewall or security suite may be blocking it. If you’re on a company network, ask your IT administrator to confirm that the app (ula.exe) and the required address/port for Chaos Unified Login are not blocked: http://localhost:30301/

4 Reinstall Chaos Unified Login

If you can’t find the app at all:

  1. Download the latest Chaos Unified Login installer from:
    https://my.chaos.com/download/build?product=Unified+Login
  2. Install the macOS version.
  3. Start your Chaos product and try logging in again from the product.
