How to use V-Ray Velocity pass with ReelSmart Motion Blur (RSMB) plugin?

Overview

The VRayVelocity render element can be used to add motion blur to your render in compositing. This guide serves as a reference on how to use the VRayVelocity pass with the ReelSmart Motion Blur plugin in Adobe After Effects and Nuke. 

Setting up Velocity pass and Render Output

1. Add a VRayVelocity render element to your scene.
2. Set the Max velocity parameter. To check what value to add, please find a frame where the movement is the fastest, then render and see what the Max velocity in last frame value is. Use a slightly higher value than the one displayed.
   
   
3. Render the scene with the velocity render element and save the output.

Using the RSMB plugin in AfterEffects

1. Create a new composition, then load the RGB and Velocity sequences.
2. Make sure to turn on the Preserve RGB option for the Velocity sequence. This will disable Color Management conversion for the element. Right-click on the Velocity sequence, then go to Interpret Footage > Main, and in the Color Management tab enable Preserve RGB:
   
3. Add the RSMB Pro Vectors effect to the RGB sequence. Go to Effect menu > RE:Vision Plug-ins > RSMB Pro Vectors.
4. In the Effect Controls panel, select the velocity sequence from the Motion Vectors drop-down menu:
   
   
5. Set the same value for the Max Displace as the one you used for the Max Velocity parameter in VRayVelocity Render Element. In this case 70:
   
   
6. Control the motion blur of the footage with the Blur Amount parameter.
7. Render the result.

Using the RSMB plugin in Nuke

1. Create a new comp, then load the RGB and Velocity sequences in 2 read nodes.
2. Make sure to set the Colorspace in the Read tab of the Velocity Read node to "linear":
   
   
3. Add the RSMB PRO Vectors node.
4. Connect the RGB read node to the Source of the RSMB PRO Vectors node and the Velocity read node to the Motion Vectors:
   
   
5. In the Properties panel of the RSMB Pro Vectors node, set the same value for Max Displacement value as the one you used for the Max Velocity parameter in VRayVelocity Render Element. In this case 70:
   
   
6. Control the motion blur of the footage with the Blur Amount parameter.
7. Render the result.
