Graphics card drivers explained for Enscape

Some of the most commonly occurring issues in Enscape are caused by outdated graphics card drivers (GPU drivers). This is not surprising, since regular operation of the computer can be achieved with very outdated drivers and because of that, they are often forgotten.

However, when working with applications, which utilize the graphics card for their operations, their importance becomes apparent. Most prominently, when an application, like Enscape, is unable to run correctly.

Since Enscape replies almost entirely on the graphics card, it’s important to know more about the topic.

What do the GPU drivers do?

Without getting into too much detail, the GPU drivers are what allows an application (in this case Enscape) to “communicate” with the graphics card and utilize its capabilities. They are essentially a bridge between the application and the GPU.

How are the GPU drivers updated?

The best way to update them would be from the chip manufacturer’s official website, be it NVIDIA or AMD. Their pages will prompt you to choose the series and model of your card, as well as the operating system’s version before you download them. It’s also possible to download them from their respective desktop applications as well.

While Windows can offer you to do that automatically, it’s not a reliable way to update them and you will often be misled to think your drivers are up to date, when in fact they aren’t.

When should the GPU drivers be updated?

As a rule of thumb, Enscape requires drivers, which are not older than 6 months. While that’s generally true, it’s also best to update them every time you install a new Enscape version.

In general, you don’t have to install every driver update available all the time, but it’s a good practice to periodically check for and install driver updates.

Exceptions

If your organization is unable to install every new Enscape and GPU driver update due to internal processes which take time, it’s completely acceptable to stay on specific versions of Enscape and GPU drivers, which have been proven reliable for your needs and systems. In cases where Enscape works completely fine with the current driver version, it’s not necessary to update them.
