Fix artifacts, flickering splotches, or dark spots in Chaos Vantage animations

This article helps you eliminate flicker or splotches in Chaos Vantage animations rendered with High Quality Render by adjusting sampling, updating drivers, and applying troubleshooting options.

Adjusting sampling to reduce flickering

Flickering usually occurs when sampling is too low. Increase Samples per pixel and the Light Cache sample limit, especially for interior scenes.

  1. Increase Samples per pixel to 1000-2000 (or higher if needed) for interiors; exteriors typically need fewer samples. The setting is located in: Tools > High Quality Render > Render.

  2. Raise the Light cache sample limit to around 1000 or more for interiors; exteriors may need less. The setting is located in: Render Settings > Advanced > Lighting

Update NVidia drivers

Outdated GPU drivers can introduce artifacts when denoising the final image. It is best to use the recommended NVIDIA driver version written at the top of the V-Ray GPU page.

Additional troubleshooting

  • Rendering a few frames without a denoiser so as to determine if the denoiser is the culprit.
  • Turning off the Enable dynamic textures option (in Render tab > Advanced > Textures).
  • Increase the Light Cache’s retrace threshold (in Render tab > Advanced > Lighting) to 3.
  • Enable the Reduce flickering option (in Tools > High Quality Render > Render).
Note: it is available only when rendering sequences and NVIDIA OptiX AI denoiser is chosen.
