3ds Max OCIO color management is not fully supported at this moment

Note: this error message only applies to Corona 11. In Corona 12 and newer, OCIO color management is supported. If you are getting this error message, the best solution is to update to the newest available version of Corona.

Full error message text:

3ds Max OCIO color management is not fully supported at this moment. We highly recommend switching to Gamma Workflow. This will be improved in the future.

Available options:

  • Learn more - redirects to this page.
  • Switch to Gamma Workflow - Changes the 3ds Max Color Management Mode in the current scene to Gamma Workflow.
  • Set Gamma Workflow as default - Sets Gamma Workflow as the default 3ds Max Color Management Mode for all newly created scenes.

This error message is related to the new color management options available in 3ds Max 2024 and newer. It is displayed if the Color Management Mode in the current scene is set to OCIO, which is not fully supported by Corona 11.  The main reason for this is that 3ds Max handles file saving. Because of that, the images saved from the Corona VFB may come out with unexpected brightness (appearing too bright or too dark) depending on the file format.

As a workaround, we recommend switching to the 3ds Max Gamma Workflow Color Management Mode. In this mode, there are no issues with file saving and your saved images will appear just as you want them to.

If you would like to continue using the OCIO Color Management Mode regardless of the current limitations, you can ignore this message.

Note: The Gamma Workflow was used as the default in 3ds Max 2024 and older. It does not make the rendered images incorrect, or in any way "worse" compared to those rendered with the OCIO workflow. Corona internally uses a wide-RGB color space anyway, regardless of the 3ds Max color management options you enable.
