Missing, Disconnected, Orphaned, or Self-duplicating Materials in Rhino

This article contains information related to the missing, disconnected, orphaned, and self-duplicating materials in Rhino and answers the following questions:

  • What to do with a file that has already encountered the issue?

  • What information to provide to Chaos Support

Issue Description

Issues related to missing Rhino materials, Disconnected materials, and materials self-duplicating have been recognized by the Chaos team to appear randomly for a while now. Currently, some of the identified reasons causing those issues are the following:

  • The project has been created with a Rhino 7 version older than SR 13/15 or it contains imported content that was created using this version range
  • Material duplication and loss of data due to being saved without serialized plugin data
  • Material duplication and loss of data due to a project being opened, edited, or saved when the V-Ray for Rhino plugin is not installed or disabled
  • Rhino project loading before V-Ray is fully initialized
  • Material duplication and loss of data related to specifics on the user side

The Chaos team is actively working on investigating the issue and is in ongoing communication with McNeel in an attempt to provide a solution. However, due to the random nature and occurrence of this problem, the team faces difficulties in replicating the behavior and therefore struggles to detect the circumstances under which it appears. This also leads to the current assumption that the problem is tied to specifics on the user side which makes collecting the required information much more difficult.

In order to speed up the process of solving the issue, we kindly ask you to contact our Chaos Support team in case the issue is encountered. Any information regarding the problem is highly appreciated and will aid the team in providing a solution. We understand that this issue causes substantial inconvenience and we greatly appreciate your patience and understanding.

What to do with a file that has already encountered the issue?

If the file has already been affected and the materials are missing from the Asset Editor we recommend testing a few steps. Firstly, try to reopen the file by starting Rhino, making sure V-Ray is properly loaded, and then using the “Open” command line.

Go back to the previously saved version of the file and check if the same issue reoccurs. ( for example, if the current file is Projectname_10, go back to Projectname_09) If the problem reoccurs, go back to the serialized saved version where the issue is not present. If the file is not “Saved as” and serialized, search for the Autosave file in the Recycle bin.

If there is no serialized old file or autosave file, do not copy and paste/import the project or any parts or assets from this project to another, as this may cause issues and unpredictable behavior with the new project as well.
